speaking of chess....

Have any of you used the chess websites? After his chess camp this year, ds12 tried a free trial of Chess Magnet School and liked it quite a bit. We are trying chess.com and chesskid.com now, to see which he likes the best. Ds10 had fun playing blitz chess yesterday on chesskid.com, but he's not as serious a player as ds12 (which isn't to say that ds12 is that great, but he loves reading chess books and thinking about strategy).

Thanks for the tips, Theresa.  He will definitely need an app or online chess program soon, as he looks set to zoom past the limited expertise of DH and myself.  He's devouring kids' chess books.

Ds12 loved the book "Chess for the Gifted and Busy." He renewed it multiple times on several different occasions from our local library and thought it was wonderful. I can't really give advice on any chess books, lol. Honestly, they seem excruciatingly boring... I know I shouldn't say that, but between ds12 talking chess and ds10 giving me the sports rundown on a daily basis, my eyes are glazing over. Thank goodness dd19 is here to talk about politics and literature (dd21 causes as much eye-glazing-over with science minutiae!!). Do you play chess yourself? I feel bad that I don't, but my first dh played competitively and was so crazy, over-the-top competitive that it ruined my trying to learn. Current dh played competitively in HS, but doesn't have much time to play with ds. The girls had the same fun experience trying to learn from their late dad, and also don't like to play.

I have little to no exposure to the game.  I know the names of the pieces and the directions they can move, and the objective.  That's about it.  DH is marginally better, but still not someone who ever played competitively.
