What's everyone listening to these days?

I'm curious as to what types of music your kids listen to. Do you find it similar to the other

DD 14 listens mostly to broadway musicals these days like "Next to Normal," "Bloody, Bloody Andrew Jackson" and "Book of Mormon." She is also discovering older musicals like "Company" and "Kiss of the Spiderwoman"

There's no rhyme or reason around here. dd13 is listening to the music form "Sita Sings the Blues". dd17 listens to lots of different stuff, but jazz is her main interest. ds20 listens to loud stuff I can't identify, some of it with a lot of drums. But the other day when I asked if he'd like to take some percussion lessons (there's a really really good rock drummer on the music department faculty of his college that dd17 may take lesson with), he requested that I stop "pushing" instruments on him that he doesn't have any interest; that he wants to play his violin again if I will kindly find it for him. dd17's main instrument is the sax, but she wants to reclaim her ability to play the violin, so she has asked me to go through the Suzuki repertoire with her, starting with Book 1. dd13 loves to sing, and occasionally works diligently on fiddle tunes for a couple of weeks. I hardly ever listen to music, even though I have a big library...at least not now. I'm more likely to listen to specific things on youtube, like the Vivaldi concerto for 2 violins that dh and I are planning to perform some time in the next year.

I think Country is perfect for driving...takes me back to my childhood when my parents would drive from Montana to visit our relatives in Texas...and there was nothing else on the airwaves. Of course back then it was stuff like "Jolene" and "Gimme that old time religion" (not sure if it's the title) and "I walk the line", or similar.

Our outdoor theatre is doing "Little Shop of Horrors" now....dh remarked disgustedly that there weren't any "singable" numbers....so why can I not get the one about the dentist, and "Suddenly Seymour" out of my head? Hmmmm.....

We just did Little Shop here and I agree with you ... there's some singable stuff in there: Skid Row and Suddenly Seymour of course.

I don't remember Skid Row, but will probably get a chance to hear it again because everyone wants to see the Audrey II's again (rented for $3,100 for the set of five). This is the first summer in four years that we haven't had six weeks of messed up summer schedule from playing in the pit...our Little Shop has on stage band with only 2 keyboards, guitar, bass guitar, and drum set. So we got to see the whole thing! (And now Suddenly Seymour is back in my head...dang!)

There is a LOT of variety in what gets played in our house: from classic symphonies to alternative rock to old grunge to new upbeat music... a little punk, a lot of violin and cello classics. Indie music, a tiny bit of country, music that was 'hot' during our college years... And DD L brings some now popular music in too by means of her singing classes. I

My kids, 12 and 9, have kind of wacky taste in music. Three months ago they wanted to hear Genesis all the time. Right now they're obsessed with Pink Floyd's "The Wall" and are practicing a short piece from it on the guitar and violin together. YDD is obsessed with singers like Michael Jackson, Janis Joplin, Amy MacDonald and Amy Winehouse and plays their music all the time in her room while singing along at the top of her voice. My twelve-year-old's ipod is full of classical music.

I don't think most other kids "get" their music. That's okay for them. They listen to pop when friends are here. Everyone likes to listen to Maddie Jane, so that's who gets played when other kids are around.

DH and I have probably influenced them. They wouldn't have heard a lot of this music unless we had played it for them to begin with, I guess.
