Reading the Potter thread got me thinking about how different our residential communities are.

This thread has been a wonderful read on my Sunday morning :-) I had to chuckle about the descriptions of numbers of inhabitants in the small towns... we live in what we call a 'small town' here as well, which means it has over 100.000 inhabitants ;-) We're within a 10 mile radius of 2 big cities, which have around 800.000-1.000.000 people.

Our town is a historic place, with a 16th-18th century centre of town with little canals and lots of national historic icons: the court where our first king Willem of Orange was murdered, the church where all royal family members are buried underneath, the famous Blue Delft Pottery factories etc. We used to live in the centre of town but housing there is very small, so we moved to the edge of the centre to an old store from 1905.
