Thursday Homeschool Recess 1/24

Hey moms and grandmas, come on out and play.  It's recess time!

I just love Thursdays.  I get to sit around all day, not at home in my comfy chairs, and feel like I've wasted the whole day and accomplished absolutely nothing.  Ah, the joys of co-op day (with co-op followed by counseling).  I'll at least get most school stuff done with ds, and I'll have lots and lots of time to read.  Oh yes, so I should be happy, certainly?

It's funny you should mention those sites.  We've been toying around the idea of visiting them.  It's a full day drive for us, but the idea of a private ranger led tour of Gettysburg in our car sounds wonderful.  DS reminded me that I had said when he turned 13 we would do another brithday trip instead of a party or lots of gifts.  We did this when he was 11 and it was wonderful.  I'm looking into some options- Chickamauga battle field keeps popping up as an idea too (and its on the way to Disney).

Well...you can get to Disney from Gettysburg Wink  Or, you could combine a trip to Gettysburg with visiting Washington, DC and/or other places like Baltimore, Philadelphia, NYC, Williamsburg, etc.  The possiblities are endless, LOL.

I asked my mom if they'd ever found Civil War artifacts in the orchard but she said no, they didn't.  I have to think that the armies covered that ground because they're pretty much smack-dab between Gettysburg and Antietam.  Maybe they just didn't cultivate deep enough to unearth things, or something.

Disney was number 1 on our vacation radar, but last night I was thinking about expense and I am reeling over Disney ticket and food prices.  It dawned on me that several attractions in DC would be free:)  We could stay at Gettysburg for 2 nights and then to DC for 4 nights with a last day at Mt Vernon.  Hotel costs are staggering!  I do understand that would be paying for location and the ability to walk to major attractions.  I need to do a bit more research, but it looks like costs for the 2 trips would be very similar.  DH agrees that DS would be just happy going to either location.

I always forget about the accomodations costs.  My grandparents were about 70 miles from DC, and closer to the other places, so we had a place to stay and didn't have to hotel it.  You could always bunk with my cousin that lives just outside Gettysburg.  I'm sure he wouldn't mind Cool  When they were filming "Gettysburg" he literally had re-enactors camped all around his house.  (A former co-worker of mine is  re-enactor and he's in the documentary too.  I picked him out when I watched it!)
