I just want to sing the praises of the Dean of Students offices on college campuses. For new POCS, this is the point of contact for issues your student may be having in ALL areas of college life, all campus departments. DH and I only remembered about this office because of our contact with the school's parent association, which falls under the umbrella of the dean's office. Your student does not have to initiate the contact. Your child does not have to know that you initiated their involvement. The sooner they get involved, the more likely there will be a good outcome for your child. In talking with the Dean of Students at my daughter's school, this is probably the most underutilized resource on campus. They are practically begging students to come to get familiar with their office, BEFORE serious trouble starts. They offer individual counseling, group counseling, workshops, nutrition services, activities, etc., most at no charge. They do wellness checks if you haven't heard from your kid in a while and have some concerns. They can cut through red tape, waiting lists, nonresponsiveness and bureaucracy in most instances. This probably varies a bit from school to school, but I'm pretty sure it exists in some form on all campuses. My DD became involved with this office over the summer session and this office has really made a difference.
