Can we have a Spring Roll Call? Join us!

Hi everyone, I know the board has been quieter lately with Elle being out. (Haven't heard any more from her, by the way.) I thought a Spring roll call might be a nice way to check in with everyone.

I'll start!

DSD (almost 21) finished up beauty school, but decided that wasn't what she wanted to do. It wasn't a big surprise to us, but a big disappointment since we paid for it. Now she is teaching at a preschool and planning to go back to school (on her own dime this time) to become a teacher, like her dad. It's been interesting to see her learning more about education and our broken system. She and Dh were texting back and forth last night about her class being out of control and he was giving her advice. Sweet to see that bond between them.

The other younger kiddos have just gotten over the flu and are ready for Spring Break - as am I!

How about you? What's going on in your worlds?

DS19 is on spring break of soph year, working on his studio art BA and visual communications certificate, also hoping to end up teaching (will go for his MAT after the BA). He works part time at the City Museum and loves it - if anyone makes a trip to St Louis, it's a must-see; nothing like you've experienced anywhere before, NOT a 'museum' despite the name. This summer he'll take 2 required core classes at the CC and continue working (hopefully more hours).

He had no money to go anywhere or do anything for break, including visiting his gf in Chicago, so he's just been doing stuff with friends locally, getting in at the wee hours of the morning (appeasing me, as he could just stay in his on-campus apartment instead, being only 8 miles away, but he hadn't really been home since winter break other than to pop in for 1/2 hour to do laundry now and again!) and sometimes having dinner with us. The week has been unseasonably warm, trees blooming - which is pretty but not good on allergies!

Aw, well that's nice of him to appease dear ol' mom! ;) Where are you again, Sue? It's been really warm here in CO too. In fact, our neighborhood bear awoke from hibernation early and was trying to get into my trash can at 3am this morning!

DS24 is in his first year of medical school at Loyola in the Chicago area. (Figured med school is close enough to college to still post here!) So far he's loving med school. He's dong well in his classes - passing all the exams with honors so far. But most importantly he's made a good circle of friends; they hang out between classes, get together on the weekends, etc. First real group of friends he's had since he went off to the state U in 2005. When he transferred to Northwestern in 2007 he was still isolating quite a bit due to his continued struggles with an eating disorder so he never really 'connected' there. He got engaged last summer to a girl that he's known since high school - they've been friends all along but didn't actually start dating til summer of 2010. They broke up over Christmas for awhile but I guess they're back together. We'll see how it goes. She's very insecure and absolutely hates that he talks to other girls at school. She will graduate with her undergrad in Dec. and then I imagine she'll try to find a job in the Chicago area so she can be near him.

DS21 (22 this Sunday) has been working full time at a call center since July. He's talking about going back to the CC in the fall. I'd love to see it but I'm not getting too excited. He's going to have to be the one to really want it. He's been dating a girl for over a year. She's only 17 (will turn 18 this summer). We weren't thrilled with the age difference, especially since she was only 16 when they started dating. But her parents seem OK with it and they seem to have a lot of fun together. She'll graduate high school in December and at this point she wants to follow in her sister's footsteps and go to cosmotology school.

We're loving the weather here in central IL!

Rose from WI here DD & DSIL are on spring break this week. They didn't go anywhere or do anything out of the ordinary, just working some and enjoying parenthood without the pressure of school hanging over their heads. School started last fall when Wyatt was only 3 weeks old, then they got married over winter break, so this is the first they've really felt that they could focus on him. DD will get her LPN this summer, then take a year off before finishing her RN. SIL will finish his automotive program in August, and then they plan to move out of here and get their own place.

DS27 J is also on spring break this week, not sure exactly what he is up to... tells me that Daytona Beach and Ormond Beach are incredibly busy with Bike Week in full swing and the start of the spring break season. He will be back in school on Monday. Just heard from DS24 Z in Kuwait this morning... his college classes start on Monday too. He is starting work on his degree in history, when he gets out of the army his plans are to teach high school history. Doesn't know yet if he'll be leaving the army one year from now or five years from now... though if he re-enlists he'll be just seven years from being able to take retirement.

DS S 27 will be on spring break next week i think he said. He's not a student, he's a teaching assistant at a school for juvenile delinquents. kind of ironic that he's working there... he used to BE a juvenile delinquent. He's throwing around the idea of using his GI bill to go to school for either social work or spec ed to continue to work with these kids in a more professional capacity.

And dear old mom? I am enjoying the beautiful weather here!

Jean, my grandmother was named Jenny Marie, a fine Irish name that she detested.
