http://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2012/11/the-case-for-drinking-as-much-coffee-as-you-like/265693/# "What I tell patients is, if you like coffee, go ahead and drink as much as you want and can," says Dr. Peter Martin, director of the Institute for Coffee Studies at Vanderbilt University. He's even developed a metric for monitoring your dosage: If you are having trouble sleeping, cut back on your last cup of the day. From there, he says, "If you drink that much, it's not going to do you any harm, and it might actually help you. A lot." ... The most recent findings that support coffee as a panacea will make their premiere this December in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Coffee, researchers found, appears to reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. Did your college students learn to drink coffee at home? How many cups of coffee do you drink per day?

Hahaha...this post totally got me. I was all ready to write a reply about my college student drinking...alcohol and then realized you were asking about coffee. Oops. Embarassed

Yes, my college student also drinks coffee. I'm curious now, I will have to ask him how many cups of days he drinks.

Like a lot of us, our sons started drinking coffee in college to help them stay awake while studying.  I think DS23 drinks the sugary SBUX, but DS29 the regular stuff.  I've told both of them that they could save a lot of money by brewing at least their morning coffee at home, but I don't think either one does that.  When they're home neither one has coffee with us in the a.m.

Four cups of half decaf, half reg and half hazlenut or vanilla, half reg, is what I drink each morning, and I buy whatever happens to be on sale.  With meals I drink milk and I use it to make oatmeal several times a week; I usually have only brunch and dinner.  In the afternoon I have 2-4 cups of green tea, and in the evening I have two drinks--wine, or rum+OJ, or a manhattan with lots of olives or, if I need dessert, a white Russian.  (My doc always says everything's good except for that second drink....I know.)

Up until about 10 years ago, I would regularly drink a Mountain Dew in the afternoon for another dose of caffeine.  Now I rarely drink soda, fewer than 5/month.  DH drinks lots of water all day, but I like it only after/during a workout, or on hot summer days.

Ds20 does not drink coffee. Thanks to my older BIL he's turned into a beer snob...(into imperial stouts, etc.) but thankfully can't afford it!

The title sure got my attention LOL!

Dd had been drinking some coffee before she left in August.  We got a Keurig last year for Christmas,  got a box of K-cups for a present and dd really liked it.  Didn't really start having it every day until she went off to school.  She's busy, busier than she ever was at home.  I know she has some in the morning.  The music bulding has a coffee maker in the little kitchen they have in the basement, and she says people come in all day to have some.

I didn't drink it as much before we got the Keurig. Now I have some every day.  We don't usually buy K-cups.  They are super convenient though, we got a big box of it right before graduation and people had it then.  We've got one of the inserts where you can put your own coffee in.  Dh says he likes the 8 o'clock ground blend.  Then I found the small bags of Starbucks at a pretty good price at the commissary- and dh said he prefers the Starbucks blend to anything else.

That's right, the little General Foods International coffees in tins!

When we were in the UK on vacation two years ago, we were given French press coffee everywhere, which was delicious.  DH bought a French press coffee maker, but it turns out it's quite a mess to clean up afterward so we don't use it.

I drink mostly reds but I'll have white as an aperitif or with fish.  When I had to give up gluten a couple of years ago, DH thought that was a good time for us to learn about wine, so he got a big "wine bible," found a massive wine store, and took us through the wines of South America, Spain, and Italy.  We found French wines are too expensive to drink every day.  He also started making wine with some guy who has winery-caliber equipment, and most of it came out pretty good!  Lots of people in our area make their own wine, as many are of Italian, Spanish or Portugese descent.  We're not, but we're happy that having homemade wine around here doesn't make people think you're a wino. ;)

Hi Liz, I start my day with a cup of green tea then move on to coffee. That's great how you quit sodas! I try to keep a water at work because our snack machine always runs out of eater before sodas...once my quarters are in the machine and it says sold out I push a soda button instead of just filling up my water bottle. I want it cold ;)

Hi Kelly, the international flavored coffee in the little oval tins? The days of instant coffee ...pulling out the sanka jar sure would reduce the # of folks saying they will join us in a cup today! One of my friends opened a coffee store in the mall before the days of star bucks and she got me hooked on espresso. The Cuban coffee down here makes my hair feel like it is standing straight up! Are you a white or red wine drinker?

None of my kids drink coffee.  I started in college with flavored instant coffee, graduated to regular coffee with sugar, and when I was in grad school started drinking it black because the Marketing Dept office, where I got my coffee for free, rarely had creamer or sugar.  I still drink it black unless it's super-strong.

I'm a simple woman when it comes to liquids:  water, coffee, afternoon tea (also plain), and wine.  That's it.  I occasionally have a 4oz glass of OJ or soda, which we keep for the kids, but if we didn't have it, it would never occur to me to buy it.  (But don't leave that wine rack empty, LOL!)

What's funny is that I don't drink coffee at all--I'm a tea drinker--but both kids like it, even the 17 yr old.  But since they like a lot of sugar and flavorings, it will probably give them diabetes instead of preventing it.

Pam, I used to drink diet soda, not that much, but 1-2 glasses a day and I stopped buying it.  I might have one if I go out to a restaurant but at home and even if I buy lunch at work, I switched to water.
