Getting ready for the really empty nest

It just struck me the other day that I have 7 more weeks with DS before college.  DD was home visiting for a couple of days and for his grad present from her we went to Marshall's and looked around for things for his room and then she bought him a bunch of stuff from the dollar store that he said he wouldn't even have thought of--toiletries and things like that.  He can't wait to go to college and I'll be happy for him.

But also, this will be the first time in my life that I have ever lived alone (and I'll be 57 soon).  I always had roommates, then I got married and even after the divorce, I had the kids.  On top of that, I have to sell my house to pay off the 2nd exH--that is a major chore since I have lived there 26 yrs and have to go through a bunch of stuff which I am not looking forward to.  I'm not attached to my house since it's not that great but I'll probably just move to an apt. until I can figure out what to do.  I'm not really crazy about apt. living either--I haven't had to deal with possibly noisy other tenants in a long time.

I am looking forward to being able to be spontaneous about being able to go out whenever I want (not that I don't really do that now but sometimes I feel like I really should make dinner once in a while).  I also have to remind myself that I do have to cook occasionally even just for myself--that will be different too.

Hugs - that has to be hard.  We only have one so during the school year we've been empty nesters for 4 years now (and honestly he's not around much in the summer either, definitely preferring not to be there! Odds are he'll push back next summer if he has a good enough job and will pay his utilities/fees to stay in the condo vs. spending the summer at home - to me, saving money was always preferred; to him, he likes to be on his own). Are there any condos that you can rent? Only reason I ask that is they may be quieter than apartments (definitely the case in ds's condo).

Hugs! I can't even imagine, even with one in college, with 2 little ones, the prospect of living by myself, or even just with DH is a long way away still.

LOL  can't beleive your 'baby' is headed to college - we go back a long way here at Ivillage. We've enjoyed the empty nest when we've had it but I can imagine it's going to be tough as it's been just you and him for the last couple years. Will be thinking of you over the next coupe months....
