A former president of the defunct local chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving was arrested recently by the Gainesville Police Department on a DUI charge.

Debra Oberlin, 48, was arrested after she had difficulty on a field sobriety test. She registered a .234 and .239 on breath alcohol tests. Florida's legal limit for driving is .08.

She said she only had 4 beers!! Must have been quart bottles, with this high of level, it is surprising to me she could turn on the car!

That's just sickening. I don't even know what to say. I can't imagine why she ever got involved with MADD in the first place. People with that high a BAL are usually seasoned drinkers.

She's lucky she's not dead from alcohol poisoning w/ a BAL that high.

Hi Calmama,

"seasoned" made me laugh.... more like sauced!:smileyhappy:

maybe it was the high alcohol content craft beers or after 4, I probably would lose count!

Hi Liz,

Curious,Have you ever had to defend a DUI case? Wouldn't she still be drunk with this much in her the next morning for arraignment?

Hi Rose,

Interesting to me, "seasoned" drinkers is a medical term for alcoholic?

I would guess the four sounds acceptable... not like she is debbie does a sixpack!

Livers of these seasoned drinkers should get awards!

How is your boy doing? Is he still able to drive to work? In Florida they take your license until your case is finished at court.

I used to work in a substance abuse treatment center many years ago. The 2 hallmarks of an alcoholic are withdrawal and tolerance. "Seasoned" drinkers (maybe not ALL alcoholics) have built a tolerance and are, if not alcoholics, well on their way. It takes MORE alcohol to cause a buzz. That's why the woman you are referring to (obviously a serious alcoholic) was not DEAD with a .425. A non-seasoned drinker would likely be passed out with a .30.

Hi Calmama,

With all your experience with substance abusers, do you have feelings on how we are doing preventing folks like this from getting on our highways? Should the ones who are caught get bigger fines, longer drivers license restrictions, more time initially in jail to front end load prevention?
