Hi Stacy, My step-daughter went to a beauty college, so her needs were pretty different, but I would consider things like weekend adventures with friends, concerts if that's something he's into, new clothes here and there, CDs, books (not school related)?

At ds's U, laundry is part of his fees, as is a certain amount of 'flex' money for meals. Spending money is up to him to come up with as we're providing everything else.

I assume you're talking about expenses like bedding, bath linens, microwave, dorm fridge, comfy chair, lamp..? Also computer, printer, paper, print cartridges, normal supplies like binders/spirals/pens/pencils/stapler/hole punch. A couple placesettings of microwaveable dishes, cups, flatware, dish detergent, dish towels. One thing ds liked was nylon shorts with pockets so he could slide on quickly and go to the bathroom or shower and put his keys in his pocket (vs. having to do all the fastening of cargo shorts or pants)

Otherwise ongoing really wasn't that much of an issue til he'd run out of food money late in each semester (beyond the dorm swipe).

My ds was in a suite-style dorm and they were responsible for supplying their own cleaning supplies for cleaning the bathrooms (which they didn't do very often so not a big expense LOL) and providing their own toilet tissue and paper towels. This was not made clear before move-in so if your ds is in a suite you might want to check.

He may need to refill the toiletries like toothpaste, soap, shampoo, deodorant before he comes home on break.

Because your son is attending a smaller college, this may not be applicable, but the other

When DD was in the dorm they had to pay a fee (included in all their fees) for a landline (which no one ever used) and this "communication fee" also included cable TV--I think w/ HBO.
