and because many people, INCLUDING the Republican nominee for President, have suggested that the Chicago teachers are insensitive and greedy, striking for more money --they're NOT-- here is some information, and a cautionary tale...

I am glad that all my teaching degree led to is teaching my own kids. Sad in a way, but very glad that I have not been caught up in No Child Left Behind, and all the other politics. I am very thankful that both my husband and I are very frugal so that we agree that we can live on one income.

Teaching in a public schools was the hardest job I ever had. And, I can't say it was the most rewarding job because teaching teens is not all that rewarding unless they have a say in what they are learning, which is not really possible in most public schools. And, I have to admit, I was young and pretty stupid, which also didn't help a whole lot. I could probably do better now, but I don't have that urge any more other than my own kids. (I would rather be a parent advocate at a school. THAT I feel would be rewarding. But probably not pay well, but then everyone who goes into teaching knows it doesn't pay well either.)

Love it! Good for them! I am frustrated with our district because the board and the union are at an impass and in the 10 years I have lived here I have never heard either side say anything about the kids. 6 years ago we had a 21 day strike and never once did either side talk about the kids during the negotiations (at least the parts that were made public). I think they are so Intrenched in hating each other that they both lose sight of the students. Our teachers have been working with no contract for a least 2 years and things are heating up again. A very anti-union board was recently voted in and they are making things even worse. They are just looking for every opportunity to cut money from the budget. I would love to see either side post a set of goals like that. They are both just talking money.
