Sharon here, from Northern CA.  I have 2 college daughters.  Ashleigh is a senior at UC Davis and Amanda is a freshman at Sonoma State.  Ashleigh lives in an apartment by her school and Amanda lives in a dorm at her school.  We're experiencing empty nest for the first time and kind of liking it!  I work in an Elementary school library and dh Sam works for the state.

SAM in the 'burbs SW of Chicago.  My dds are 29 & 26, and the 26yo is my returning p/t CS.  Both girls live on their own, altho that might change in the future!  26dd just made a BIG leap of faith, & took a 25% cut in pay, to get in on the ground floor with a young, exciting firm.  In 3 years, the firm has gone from 2 attorneys to 5, and she will be their first, and so far, only full time support staff.  They see her becoming their office manager, and also the personal assistant to one of the partners who has a controlling interest in another business, in addition to the law firm--and no staff THERE either!  But for now, she's basically starting in the "file room" till she shows that she can do what she says she can do, and increase everyone's productivity enough to pay for her raises.

Thing is,  her mortgage payment, utilities and assesment ate up 75% of her OLD salary.  And housing values have dropped so badly in her suburb, it's pathetic.  Her condo is so far under water, there are single family homes --NOT forclosures-- going for less than what she owes, and units in her development are being listed for 40K LESS than what she paid, 3 years ago.  So we told her, if push comes to shove, we won't give her money, but she can walk away from the condo and move back home.   Her credit won't be trashed any worse than it already has been, by her worthless ex-h.

29dd is a HS teacher with Chicgo Public Schools.  Her big challange this year will be to decide if she wants to stay in CPS, and live in Chicago, or try to find a job in the 'burbs so she can move into her bf's townhouse next summer.  Meeting her CPS salary is going to be a challenge, as much as even FINDING a job, since Art teachers are not so much in demand with all the cuts in school funding.  Add to that she has tenure and is dept chair, where she is now.  Oh, and she may be going to GRAD SCHOOL, next summer.

New gf? Is this someone new since starting school or the one that he dated over the summer? Is SLU a religiously affiliated school? Jason interviewed at Loyola med school last week and I guess it's a Jesuit based school.

Yes, SLU is Jesuit like Loyola or Marquette (and ds is NOT religious). Yes, new gf at SLU vs. the one going to U of Chicago.

Theresa with four kids, two in college.

Dd20 is a senior studying Biology. She plans to work for a few years in a lab once she graduates, and eventually wants to study neuroscience and get her doctorate. She attends a small, private, liberal-arts college about ten minutes away, but she lives on campus. In between some senior projects and research, she's getting ready to
