http://www.nytimes.com/2013/01/23/education/public-universities-to-offer-free-online-classes-for-credit.html Here is a nytimes article talking about the future. How do you feel about online education and the credentials needed for careers in today's workforce? Would you encourage your college student in this direction? How many online classes has your college student participated in during their college career?

I'm still not sure how I feel about online classes as anyone could be doing the homework, etc.  DS is in art, so it'd be tough to not have a teacher guide him as needed on the technique.  Me having been in physics/math/EE again it'd be hard with no labs and no instant feedback; I don't think I could get it all by just reading a book and doing homework.   Neither ds or I or dh (now in MBA classes) has done an online class yet, and doubt we will.

I really do think that online classes are the wave of the future. Neither dd took one in college, but both took a few in HS. Ds12 has taken some of the classes offered by Coursera and Udacity, and found them very well done (Dh listened in on a few). The dss might take an online course this summer that is done real time through an interactive computer program and I've read good things about it. I don't know about doing a whole HS or college curriculum this way, but for the odd class here or there, I like it.
