OT - sick to my stomach 'cause I cracked the glass on my ipad

This is totally off topic, but I need to just talk about this. My husband bought me an iPad2 for Mother's Day and he has been so wonderful about not using it even though he wants one himself. I must say that I never asked for an iPad and certainly didn't expect one, but I love it. Well a couple of days ago I dropped it. I wasn't even doing anything stupid with it like balancing it on some precarious perch, or holding it along with a bunch of other stuff and trying to open the door. No, I was simple picking it up off the kitchen counter when I lost grasp of it and it hit the tile floor hard. At the time I thought it was okay, but this morning I noticed the corner is cracked. The crack is bound to spread across the iPad and my poor husband is going to be very upset. I called apple and I have to take it 50 miles away and pay $350 to fix it. I am just totally sick. I can't believe I am so clumsy. My husband has been really stressed out at work, tried to take a couple days off around Christmas and ended up not being able to take any time off and instead actually working through both holidays. I am waiting until he gets home to tell him because I don't want him thinking about this at work. I know this will add to his stress and I feel awful. Thanks for letting me share. Robin

It seems this is a common problems with Ipads, and other electronic media machines.

Is there ANYthing else wrong with it? DS had his iPhone crack due to dropping but the on button was sticking so they replaced it for that (at Apple). Just a thought.

I am not going to pay $350. That is crazy. In a couple of months the ipad3 will come out and then I can probably get a new ipad2 for that price. I couldn't agree more about the tile floor. The tile was here when we bought the house. We had good old vinyl linoleum in our old townhome and I thought it was very practical. My husband always wants to upgrade and I always say "what do I care what everyone else has or thinks is great, this is my kitchen.". Our new kitchen had Formica countertops and someone else might have nixed the house for that reason alone. My husband wants to get granite and I say "no way". The Formica is very practical and I couldn't care less what it looks like.

Everything works just fine so I guess I am out of luck, sort of.

My ds says that lots of places can fix it for much less than Apple would charge, that you can Google something like "iPad screen repair" and see what you come up with.

Please let us know what happens in the end. I suspect that my SIL is going to need this info. For Xmas she gave her granddaughters (aged 4 and 6) each an iPod Touch. She got covers for them but not the protective cases. On the way home from our holiday visit my kids were making bets about how long before one of them drops it and cracks the screen. 4 and 6yo, I don't know what she was thinking!

I found a bunch of places that would do it for about $140. Not cheap, but sure better than $350. When I get it fixed I will let you know what I think.

Much to my surprise my husband really liked the krazy glue idea and my son thought it was a bad idea. I would have guessed that one would go the otherway.

Ironically my husbands absolutely crazy work schedule worked in our favor. When I told him he just shrugged and said "things happen and with as crazy as work has been this isn't even a blip on my stress meter". I thought that one would go the otherway too - I thought the broken iPad would put his stress level over the top. I am so relieved that it doesn't bother him.
