Fame was ranked 15th in 1997, 1st today.

Ugh.

http://thechart.blogs.cnn.com/2011/08/05/study-tweens-aim-for-fame-above-all-else/?hpt=hp_t2

This caught my eye because I was just having a conversation last night with my friend who Is a middle school teacher, and at the fashion show i was helping this age ...there is a real disconnect....that you have to put in the work now to reap benefits later

“(Tweens) are unrealistic about what they have to do to become famous,” Patricia Greenfield, Ph.D from the Department of Psychology at UCLA and co-author of this study told CNN. “They may give up on actually preparing for careers and realistic goals.”

Hi Sam,
I am baffled too, a bunch of the young folks i work alongside need so much help with how to get from Point A to Point B. Most of us have not won life's lottery why do kids with no marketable skills believe they will just get discovered!?

Hi Liz,
Definitely saw some moms hungering for their kids to be the star in our fashion show... The kids were allowed to choose their own outfits... Someone let a child pick the same outfit as already had been chosen sooo a calll was made to notify the child/parents we had a sub so they would not look like twins and the mom got enraged and said she could not tell her child!
Interestingly that little girl could not make it down the runway by herself and then when her older brother walked with her... She would not look at anything but her shoes.

<<>> I was going to get to that in my rant, because obviously, kids who are sitting on their butts 8 hours a day staring at various idiot boxes , are being led by example. And the trend of flooding the airwaves with "reality' shows versus scripted (semi) intelligent programming, just makes me grind my teeth. As the Boss said... "57 Channels and Nothing On"

PS: My DH has been working in Jersey for most of this year. There are some younger guys on the job, who kept telling him to watch Jersey Shore. Which he did, once, and told me, "Made me want to shoot my TV. Now I know why these guys on the job need printed instructions on how to bend over."

However, there ARE a few people who think the way we do...Check out the comments section, here. http://insidetv.ew.com/2011/08/08/eureka-cancelled/#comments

When I opened your link it was all foreign to me--never heard of the show Eureka or of Syfy.

My friend's sons were friends w/ one of the guys from Jersey Shore years ago when they would do DJ gigs together.

I don't like reality tv for the most part - too brainless and most of the people on the shows are idiots IMO, or at least act like it most of the time.

Hmm.. Interesting. I never really thought of that before, but it is true. Although when I think of fairy tales I think of stories about Princesses and such and it seems that they were kind of about being "famous" and nothing else. Well maybe they were love stories as well, but let's face it there was never any indication that you needed to have a deep meaningful relationship with your spouse. Just be a beautiful princess and a handsome prince and your troubles were over. You would be famous all throughout the land.
