Reading a post from re: roommates by Jean made me wonder ...

How has your college student solved the sharing of an apartment when the rooms are not of equal size or ensuite with a bath?

Was there a difference in rent? Did the rooms get exchanged mid year? Did the roommate provide more furniture or give up the parking spot or buy more for the communal groceries?

Did you have this experience when you went to college? Did this impact you keeping your roommate for multiple years?

Have you heard any stories yet from this year? How are your college students feeling about their living conditions?

DS19 was in the dorm last year with a roommate he didn't like (smelly, drank/partied a lot, never went to class, baseball jock) so anything would be better! This year he's in an on-campus one bedroom 'convertible' apartment meaning it has one of those sliding partition walls like a hotel does in a banquet room. They keep the wall open most of the time but then close it at night. He loves it, and so far hasn't complained about anything. They both love to cook, so it's working well. The partition does not split it in half but they worked out who would be where, so I guess no problems there - no rent difference.

I lived at home/commuted in college, and in grad school rented an off campus furnished apartment; no roommates.

Scale rent by sq-ft of rooms. In DD's case, one with ensuite is paying $100 more a month ($630 versus $730) and no
