Off topic, but can your public school teachers strike?

I have lived in a number of states, but PA is the first one where the teachers can strike. The district next to ours is on strike right now. They went on strike a week and a half ago and I don't know how long it will last. About 6 years ago our district teachers went on strike for 21 school days. It was a really unpleasant experience for everyone and I am afraid that we are headed that direction again. The teachers have been working without a contract for a couple of years, and I don't see the union and the board agreeing to any contract anytime soon. Has anyone else been thought this? Robin

They can and do strike here in San Diego. One of the districts went on strike last year, and the district that my kids were in went on strike when dd was in 4th grade I think (she's almost 26 so its kind of blurry now lol).

I think that technically, teachers in our state cannot strike. That said, last spring there was some really unpopular legilation attached to the state budget that public employees protested. A lot of teachers "called in sick" to go to the capitol to protest - in effect striking without calling it a strike.

Teachers here are not classified as providing an essential service. So, they can and do strike. However, they tend to work to rule first. We haven't had a strike for awhile but there was one hen the kids was young. It was not for money but job action against government education policies.

I work for a public school district and our teachers can strike. They've threatened it once since I've worked here. I'm in the classified union, not the teachers' union. Our contracts are negotiated seperately, so I hope they never do strike. It would be really touchy to cross the picket line.
