Very OT--Immersion Blenders?

This has nothing to do with college students but since there are so many active members here I figure that some of you might have this kitchen tool. (although maybe it could be a good gift for some of our CSs) Elle, hope you don't mind!

I'm thinking about asking dh for a stick blender for Christmas but know I'd better do some research first. I'm seeing that there are so many things to consider: corded vs cordless, weight and length, various attachments, power and number of speeds, plastic vs metal gears, lots of brands and price points.

Initially I was thinking of using one mainly to puree soups in the pot and maybe to make some smoothies. But it looks like the ones with attachments can replace a handheld mixer for making batters, whipping cream etc (I do not have a stand mixer) and some of them are good for chopping onions etc too.

If anyone can give me any advice, personal experience, or recommendations I'd really appreciate it.

I used it today, to make Alfredo sauce, which I altered by using fresh Fontinella and fresh Romano instead of Parmesan.

Alfredo sauce isn't on my list unfortunately. There's nothing like wearing spandex cycling apparel in public to remind you about watching your diet LOL. Your sauce sounds delish though. My splurges are usually on sweets.

Forget the spandex.. There is also nothing like having your doctor monitoring your blood work.

I freely admit that I am overweight.
