There are rumors swirling around my son's high school about an incident that was being planned for this Friday during an assembly. With all the fears about school shootings, it's definitely got the students scared, and the rumor mill has it so that parents that don't even have kids at the high school are scared of sending their kids to their respective middle and elementary schools that day. They are having extra police presense, there is already a city cop there every day as it is. I also heard that they'll be having metal detectors and a lockdown during the school day to to make sure the kids feel safe.
Some parents are keeping their kids home that day. I talked with my dh and we are still sending my son. We both believe that you can't wrap your kids in a bubble as much as you would like to. I'm glad that our district is taking the threats seriously, but it's frustrating that kids will even make these allegations as a prank. If anything, they are probably safer on that day then they would be on a normal school day :(
How do you handle these types of situations? This is a first for us.

I'd send mine to school, although my heart would be in my throat. I think the best thing to do is instill cautiousness and observation skills in kids, but I don't ever want mine fearful of the world at large.
It's scary but I think I would have still sent my kids that day too. I remember back when I first started school, kids pulling the fire alarm was the biggest "prank" they had to worry about but by the time I was in high school, it had already escalated to "bomb threats".
I just keep trying to remind myself that the vast majority of these incidents really are just pranks and idle threats but when shootings like Columbine and Newtown hit the news, it's hard.

My kids go to a private school in a secluded neighborhood. Most people don't even know it's there. However, it backs up to conservation land, so when a bank was robbed at gunpoint in a neighboring town a few weeks ago and the suspect ran through the woods near their school, the police called the school and told them to lock all outside doors and not let anyone in or out. The kids still got to go about their business within the school, though, so it wasn't a real lockdown.
This exact same thing is happening at a high school in our area. Text message rumors were spread that something would be happening during an assembly on Friday. It started as a fire but the rumors are now saying a gunman was planning to show up. They have since cancelled the assembly as a precaution. So very sad that our children have to worry about these things. School should be a safe place, not a place of worry and fear. :(
