The people on CC are not only obnoxious, many of them are also liars (people claiming to have received NMS on their sophomore PSAT scores, for example, when that is impossible,

There's a lot of good information in here, but wanted to point out two things that are not in line with what we are experiencing here - so may not be true everywhere.

First of all, my sophomore daughter did take the PSAT on Wednesday, as did every Sophomore in her school who is in either of the top two math levels offered for sophomores (Pre-Calc/Trig and Algebra II). The school scheduled it during the school day, and paid for the testing. It's true that their scores won't count for National Merit Scholarships, and they'll have to take it again for next year. But, between that and the fact that many kids have taken the SAT as early as 7th grade for things like the Johns Hopkins CTY programs - I don't think we can really say as a general rule that sophomore year is too early to have any kind of idea of what kind of school you might be able to pursue.

In fact, my daughter got her first college "come take a look at us" mailing at the end of her freshman year, and has been contacted by 2 different colleges already at this point in her sophomore year.

I definitely think it is early, and we are really no where in the process of looking - since she really hasn't narrowed down what she is interested in studying, which makes it almost pointless to look.

Wondering if anyone has done any kind of career testing anywhere with their kids?

CC was helpful for certain practical things.

I think you are right that a kid might have some idea as to the type of school s/he wants to pursue pretty early on but in most cases, I wouldn't use sophomore PSAT scores--it seems that it's become pretty much the rule that sophomores do take the PSAT--or college mailings as a guideline.
