First college overnight!
| Mon, 09-24-2012 - 10:28am |
DD is going on her first overnight visit to one of her prospective colleges. Right now it's #3 on her list - wonder where it will be after her visit?
20yo DS did an overnight at the same college when he was looking. Prior to his overnight, it was his #1 choice; afterwards, it fell to #2. He felt the vibe was too mellow for him and he needed more energy.
DD has another overnight scheduled for next week at her #1 school. She's already visited twice, so it would have to be a rotten experience to deter her.
Anyone else have a kid doing overnights at colleges?

DD and I are going to a recruiting weekend at her #1 school at the end of this month, she is really excited about it.

She's planning to apply ED to Columbia University. as it's clearly her top school. She wrote all the supplemental essays for her other choices, too, as they all require them, and last weekend she recorded her audtion for the music program to send along with her applications. Alas, no one "recruits" music majors.
DD turned out to have a similar experience with her overnight that DS did at the same college three years ago. The visit felt friendly but disorganized and there was a LOT of pot smoke. Pot smoke is DS's #1 complaint about his current college; he's found friends who don't smoke but his college makes Princeton Review's top 20 Reefer Madness list.
So, that's disappointing. I'm guessing she'll still apply but will be hoping harder to get into her #1 or #2 choices.
I know! You would think they'd have a sophomore or a junior hosting. Instead they had a freshman, in a freshman dorm, four weeks into the academic year. I certainly wasn't putting my best foot forward myself at that time, and would have been an awful host myself. By junior year, I'd have had a great perspective to share with a senior in HS.
An overnight visit in the Freshman dorm 4 weeks into the semester? Sheesh.
At that point you're still trying to get used to campus life yourself! At least that's what I saw when we saw dd for the first time since dropping her at the dorms 4 weeks ago.
Btw- dd never did any overnight visits. Could have.
And LOL about the comment that "nobody recruits music majors." BTDT already. And my youngest is talking quite possibly doing music as well (music therapy- not education).

You are right. Dd is a freshman in a small Christian school, not with any restrictions, and she is shocked how loaded some people get weekend after weekend. She told us she has gone to one party, and while fun, not something she wants to do all the time. Her roomie is like her, and they keep their door open and stay up late to help others stagger to their rooms. We live right by Wheaton College, the second place for non party school behind BYU. They are a quite bunch, but they are not for either of my kids, they just allowed dances a few years ago.
