First college overnight!

DD is going on her first overnight visit to one of her prospective colleges.  Right now it's #3 on her list - wonder where it will be after her visit?

20yo DS did an overnight at the same college when he was looking.  Prior to his overnight, it was his #1 choice; afterwards, it fell to #2.  He felt the vibe was too mellow for him and he needed more energy.

DD has another overnight scheduled for next week at her #1 school.  She's already visited twice, so it would have to be a rotten experience to deter her. :smileywink:

Anyone else have a kid doing overnights at colleges?

We're not ready for college visits yet, but  DS16 and I are going to his first college fair next week.   My oldest did overnights at his top two schools and that really helped him to decide.

You don't need to go to a "sober" school to have sober friends.  DS gets annoyed by all the pot smoking at his school, and drunk people make him nervous, but he's made friends who don't drink or smoke pot.  And there is a lot to do on campus that involves neither of those things.  Thankfully, being a nerd is cool nowadays. :smileyhappy:

DD was expecting to run into pot smoking at this college she visited, but I don't think she expected to find SO much of it.  She also realized just how small a 2400-person liberal arts college is, something that DS didn't find frustrating until his second year of college.  DD is thinking that a larger, more diverse university is more her style; she has friends at Columbia and BC who don't drink or smoke pot and have had no problem finding friends who don't either.

BTW some schools have "substance free" housing where the residents sign a document saying they won't drink or use drugs.  It's for my people like my kids, and yours, who prefer to be surrounded by people who are more serious about college and less serious about substance abuse.

Dd and her roomie are of the same mindset. She did say she had a party to go to this weekend. She says she is walking with friends and just wants to meet some other friends. I think that when you have like minded people about helps. She is in the Honors part of the dorm, so that helps too.
