Tutoring programs?

Has anyone here ever used a for-profit tutoring program like Sylvan? If so, how much did it cost and were you satisfied with the results? I don't have a HS student, my dd is 26 and needs to brush up on math skills (long story but basically about trying to raise GPA to get accepted at a U) and rather than spend 2 semesters taking remedial math we're wondering if a tutoring program would be cost-effective. If you don't have any first hand experience but have suggestions or can point me in the right direction I'd really appreciate that too.

Arryl, I hadn't heard of the Khan Academy. I'll tell dd about it. We found a Cliff Notes Algebra I book from 10+ years ago and sent it to her to review...I think the plan now is to try to brush up on her skills then take a placement test so Khan might be just the thing for her.

Thanks for your reply. We're still exploring the various options. The remedial math would take 2 semesters at community college to then get into a college freshman Algebra class, so a long time to fulfill that requirement. I don't know how they would charge because the remedial classes are "not for credit" and the CC charges per credit attempted, but I'm sure they're not free. Dd is trying to find out if she could take a placement test at the CC (for some reason she thinks not) to possibly be placed in some class other than Remedial 1--and of course all of the schools are closed for the holidays.
I am wary, as you suggested, and I know those for-profit schools are expensive....but with dd almost 27, in a way time is money. It might be worth it but we'll have to see.
No personal experience, but some of the kids at my kids' high school use Summit. I think their focus is SAT prep, but they may have other subject tutors as well. They are expensive, about $700 for an SAT prep course. The school recommends them because they get results and are apparently more affordable than some of the others.
I'd be very wary if I were you because the whole industry seems kind of a racket to me. If the remedial math tuition is cheaper, I'd go with that.
