Many schools here didn't start until Monday, due to the timing of Rosh Hashanah. DS's new school was one of them. We went to a back-to-school picnic on Sunday, where he met some of the kids, but he was SO shy that I was starting to worry. However, he came home from school fired up yesterday. Liked every single teacher, every class, and every student. There are 8 kids in his classes, so of course he already knows their names and said they are all nice, every one of them. He showed us the pictures he drew in Art, which he was so proud of! That surprised me - he has never paid any attention to drawing, although we know he has talent, and his siblings are both *very* talented in Art. His new Art teacher must have really made him want to try. In fact, he did his homework without pitching a fit or saying "I can't do it" - his attitude was that he would try to get it all correct. Amazing.
Because it's an independent school, they don't have to meet NYS public school requirements. Therefore, he doesn't have gym, health, technology, extra "labs" in core classes, or any of those other requirements that meet 1-2 days a week. Instead, he has a calm, normal schedule of classes that meet 5 days a week: Language Arts, History, Earth Science, Pre-Algebra, Latin, Music, and Art, with a period divided into Study Hall & Lunch. I am so thrilled that they consider Music and Art worthy of having a class in five days a week!
So...big sigh of relief...after all the anxiety and testing and everything else we've been through with him in the last year, we seem to have found the right place for him.
