Britax marathon in a non-LATCH car?

We have a britax marathon (2008) that we have always used in one car - our volvo suv. My husband's car is an old 1999 honda civic without the latch system. Somehow, for the past 3 years, we have kept the kids only in my car. However, it's a pain, because when each of us have one child, the person with the civic is basically trapped at home.

I don't know if it's just that I don't trust his old car, but is the marathon as safe in the no-latch civic? My son is 3.5, and weighs about 40lbs. He turns 4 in April. I had been trying to wait out getting him a new carseat for when he turns 4, but we recently moved, and need more flexibility in using our cars.

Thanks for any input!

Until I started using my mom's van, I didn't have a vehicle with LATCH. Its not any safer, its just supposed easier to get a safe, tight install. So as long as you can get a tight install, its safe. My suggestion would be to get him a less expensive seat for the least used car. For example, my DS has a First Years True Fit in the van, but a Cosco Scenrea in DH's truck because his in that vehicle less often and for shorter rides.
