LATCH limits?

Call me stupid, but do cars have weight limits for the LATCH systems? I saw someone mention it and I am bewildered. I've never heard of it!

Anyone know where I can find the weight limits for the LATCH systems in my vehicles? (We have a Mazda CX-9 and a Volkswagen Rabbit.)

Thanks!

Most vehicles have a latch limit of 48lbs - and that means when the child is 48lbs, you have to use the seatbelt to install the car seat instead of the lower tether anchors.

Off hand, I know that Honda has a 40lb limit, Subaru has a different limit and almost every other car has a 48lb limit.

I think your vehicles have a 48lb limit. See if you can find the information in your car seat manual. If not, try looking up the latch limits for your cars or calling the car manufacturer.

If the vehicles have 48lb LATCH limits, wouldn't that mean the weight of the child plus the weight of the car seat? That seems to make more sense to me...
Also... is it 48lb total, or 48lb per pin?

For most car manufacturers, the weight limit (40 or 48lb) is the weight of the child only. It's 48lb per set of latch. These manufacturers are taking the weight of car seats into account and there is some leeway for heavier car seats or people who exceed the 48lb limit.

Subaru has a 60lb limit for the weight of the car seat AND child. That's the only exception I've read about.

Also, we are only talking about lower anchors here. You can use the top tether for any weight. The top tether is required in Canada and with certain car seats like the Regent. It is recommended for ALL children in harness seats though.
