Recaro- Are we doing it wrong?

My DD will be 3 in August and is rear facing in a recaro como. We cannot use the latch to install the seat in any car we have tried. The latch straps appear to be too short and don't reach the latch hooks. Are we doing something wrong? Is there some way to lengthen the latch straps on the seat? My DH is no carseat slouch but I have a hard time believing that they made the straps so short that they don't fit any car. At first we thought it was just incompatible with our car but we've tried it in several since and there is no way to make it work. It installs just fine with the seatbelt but I can't do it that way. I'm not strong enough or heavy enough to get the slack out to make it tight enough that I feel she is safe. My DH thinks that maybe the latch with this seat is meant to be used only in the forward facing position but that doesn't make sense to me.

I am not familiar with this particular seat, but a lot of seats will have two paths for the latch connectors. One will be for installing the convertible seat rear facing the other will be for forward facing. It sounds like they are in the forward facing path, thus making them "too short" for rear facing. Check your manual and it should tell you had to move the latch connectors to the rear facing path.
