Thinking ahead to the convertible.

I have a 2.5 month old butterball baby boy. His infant seat goes to 22 pounds so I need to start thinking about what to do for a convertible seat for him. He is probably around 17 pounds right now, but is growing fast (born at 6 pounds 13 ounces). I think I have a couple of months left but I want to be looking for sales/deals on whatever seat we decide to go with.

My middle DD is currently 2.5 and RF in a Marathon (33 pound RF limit - DOM was early 2008, I think). She only weighs about 24 pounds right now and has lots of room for height. So, I do have the option of buying her a new seat and letting the baby use the Marathon for now, as I've heard that other seats give kids more room for their feet RF.

Cost isn't too big of a deal, since it will very likely be used for several years (hopefully until it expires) and I want a nice seat that is easy to use and is comfy.

It will go in a 2006 Town and Country van, in 2nd row captain's chair.

TIA for any advice/thoughts/suggestions!

If it were me, I'd probably pass the Marathon on to the newbie and look at a new seat for the older child, especially if your goal is to RF until outgrown. The Marathon does have a fairly shallow seat, and there are options out there that provide better space for RF toddlers. I'd look at the Sunshine Kids Radian, Safety First Complete Air, and MyRide 65.

It sounds like your little boy might reach the rear facing weight limit of your Marathon before your dd. You know how kids gain so quickly in the first year to 18 mos then the growth curve slows down.

I would look at a Radian XTSL seat for your little boy. It rear faces until 45# and forward faces until 80# and has a tall shell. And keep your dd in her Marathon.

This way you could keep both kids rear facing. My 2.5 yr old dd just hit the 33# RF weight limit of her Marathon. My dd weighed 24# at 1 yr. So your dd might just make it until 4 yrs in the Marathon Rear facing.

Buy a new seat for your ds b/c at the size he is he will need a rear facing seat that will have a higher rear facing weight limit than your current Marathon.
