Thinner carseats for fitting side-by-side in suv with access to third row

I was referred here from the medium-sized families board and thought that you could help me out with some suggestions!
I have 4 kids and we finally succumbed to a minivan when I was pregnant with #4 for easy access in and out with so many little ones. Now I am back to work full time and have to commute about 60 miles a day (round trip thankfully) and so I want to get rid of monstrous minivan (hubby has a full size pick up so not an option for us to switch cars or anything) and get a smaller suv (really liking the Mazda CX-9).
The problem is that Britax seats that we have are way too bulky to be able to sit next to each other in second row for younger two and hang over the seat that lifts for access to third row so older two can sit back there together. We love safety of Britax (had an accident at 50mph and all little ones came out without a scratch), but they're just too bulky to meet family needs for now. Probably going to keep them though when we get rid of hubby's ridiculous pick up and get full size suv for family road trips. New seats would be used for school/day care pick ups and such and car would be mainly used for commuting without children in tow.
My sister in law has had luck with Graco seats, but was wondering if anyone have any less popular brands that we should try or tips from experience with Mazda SUVs since that is what I'm really leaning towards right now.
