i dont really know how to get started. ive never done a weekly menu before but i think it could really help with our shopping budget. ive brought this up with dh several times but he doesnt like the idea cuz he says that maybe he will be in the mood for something else. but i think that is bull cuz when ever i make something he eats it! so im just going to have a secret weekly menu, lol.

so how do you do it? do you start with ingredients in you cupboard or do you just start making up dishes and then see if you have what you need? do you plan for 7 days or 6 days and then a "left overs" day?

W/out menu planning, I am sure my grocery budget would be much higher than it is now. I think you're wise to give it a try.

You can start with what you already have on hand. Me if I can. I will make enough for leftovers. Either to eat for another dinner. Or for lunches. When I go shopping. I think about the stores sales for the week. Then think about menus I can make with that weeks sale items. Usually when I get home with my food. As I am putting it away. I think about what will we be eating. I try changing things up. So we're not getting tired of the same old things. A boneless skinless chicken breast can be turned into many things. There are many ways to do up pork chops or maybe some pot roast meat or ground beef. I been planning menus as far ahead as I can. Sometimes they get thrown off. Oh something turns up we don't eat at home. If I know what we're eating in advance. I don't think about going to the store so often buying things I might be tasting for at the moment.

I only grocery shop every 2 weeks so I write a menu for 14 meals. I don't assign them a day or date to have them I just make sure I have enough meals for 2 weeks. Then every night I choose which meal to cook. Sometimes at the end of the 2 weeks I might have a meal or two I not really in the mood for but usually the rest of the family is happy.

I start by going thru the pantry and freezer/fridge and see what I have and then make the menus. I then transfer what I need over to two grocery lists, one for Aldi and one for Super Walmart and sometimes even Sams. Then I shop and when I get home I know I have what I need to make all those meals. I even last year made a list of all the meals I cook and add to it as I find/try to recipes so when I'm making my menus I see what I want other than trying to remember everything.

Hope it works out for you! Some of us post our menus in a weekly thread down in the food/cooking folder. Share what you come up with, if you wish! :-)

I make a list from what I already have, then make a side list of what I need and then I pin the list to the fridg and let the BF pick what he wants to eat from the list.
