I have a question about budgets. I keep a very tight monthly budget which allows for all of our expected expenses. How do you manage pop up expenses like unexpected dr bills, car repairs etc. ? Do you take those from your emergency fund? Do you keep hidden cash tucked away? My problem is we usually don't have excess cash at the end of our regular budget. I hate to dip into our savings to cover those type things but not sure how else to do it.

We usually don't have any money left at the end of the month for emergencies.

Like you, my budget is so tight, it squeaks. I do the worst thing possible, I charge the unexpected, and deal with it later. Eventually, I hope to revamp the budget and be able to have a category just for medical expenses and car repairs and things like that, that will be more like savings but will be available for those things as the occur. I have precious little saved right now, because I had one of those nasty $1000 surprises recently.

When I have time, I'll list some things for sale, to build that back up to a more comfortable level. Right now, I run with about half a months bills (at least my mortgage) in reserve at all times, but that is all I can manage with the little income I have.

I guess it is good I asked this b/c my laptop blew yesterday and now I have to get a new computer. We don't have cash handy for it especially with Christmas coming. I am borrowing my mom's right now. I too will have to charge it and see if I can scramble to pay it off next month.
