The job will be actually going up to peoples houses and seeing why they have not filled out their census form and mailed it in.

Have to agree there. I only open my door to people I recognize, or to kids who are selling for their teams or schools. Right now, Girl Scouts are making the rounds selling cookies, so I always open the door to them and buy a box to help them out. I actually budget for this each year. :)

I'll fill out the census when it arrives, but I won't answer any personal questions from a stranger at my door. :)

It's a great way to earn money, though, if you're comfortable with going door to door, though.

I knew a guy who did census work for the 2000 census. He lives in a small, friendly town, so probably didn't think much of it when he applied. The main areas he was sent to perform census duties were in outlying areas where people keep to themselves and are rather anti-social. He said it was scary at times and he was threatened a lot. He said he would not do it again. Based on his experience, I don't think it's the job for me either.

That's just something to think about before applying. I saw a news story that they are having trouble finding enough census workers here (despite very high unemployment), some of it is issue finding people who speak the right languages, but it made me wonder if a lot of people (like me) think that the day and age when you can safely ring doorbells at random is over.

I think that a lot of it has to do with being temporary employment.

I never realized it was door to door work. I'm not applying either.
