Frugal or just pitiful? Time to confess!

I had a funny moment yesterday which made me think about some of the frugal things we do. In my case, it just felt pitiful, but funny. I made myself a cup of coffee, and when I opened the fridge I remembered that I had poured the last of the milk on my daughters cereal earlier that morning. "Grrrr.... " I thought. "She didn't even finish her cereal."

um..I reuse dryer sheets over and over again--it drives my DH nuts. Whenever I carry laundry to our bedroom from the dryer, I usually leave a trail of frayed dryer sheets LOL.

The other day we had run out of most of our sandwich foods and sandwiches are a staple around here for lunch! I had $10 to my name and we needed food so we went to Aldi and bought milk, bread, cheese, lunchmeat, and some fresh fruit and veggies. Then as we hadn't eaten before we left I stood in the Aldi parking lot and made sandwiches for the kids and poured milk into sippy cups I'd brought along, and handed out fresh fruit along with the sandwiches. I felt so silly doing this in the parking lot but I sure didn't want to blow my last $10 on a trip to McDonald's and we just didn't have time to take it all to a park or something! Then as we were going to be late for school and we live about 20 miles outside of town, we drove to DH's office to put the food in his office fridge and high tailed it to school! On one hand I'm pretty proud of this choice, but on the other I felt a little pathetic standing there making sandwiches at my tailgate! LOL!

I do this all the time. Yes it does feel funny at first but I really don't have the fast food choice. My dd can't have milk and other items so the major fast food places are too great a risk. But my cooler always has the right food.

We slept in a bed that was pitiful. Everyone admired its antique beauty, and it really is pretty, but it was a FULL. Dh and I are are both BIG! And it was so old it creaked and squeaked whenever someone rolled over. So all night long, dh would pin me to my side, or I'd pin him to his side because that was all the room there was. Then we'd take turns waking up our arms which were the only things that slept well. As soon as your arm got some blood back in it, you'd creakily get pinned on your other side until it got bad. HORRIBLE. Can't believe we didn't kill each other. PITIFUL, not frugal.

FINALLY, I had enough money to buy what I really wanted.....an air mattress like the Select Comfort. It's got a pillow top, the air chambers and layers and layers of foam. I lay down and think, "I can't believe how much I love my bed." And it's KING sized. If we don't go to bed at the same time, I don't even know if dh is in the bed with me.

So after almost 14 years of being a couple, dh and I can get a good night's sleep.

For anyone interested.....here's the website I bought it from. I spent $1075 dollars on a eastern king, knife edge pillowtop, dual air chamber, and it's worth every penny.

Hey, Leslie. I don't think that is pathetic. I've done it too! And the milk is pre-sweetened (well at least MY boys cereal milk is).

I will eat any leftover fruit or vegetable, no matter how gross, just to prove to my family that it can be done. The completely bruised apple, the brown banana, the dried out carrot from the bottom of the crisper, I've done it all. I don't want them to get so finicky about a little bruise or spot here and there, but I may be going too far! The irony is that this is what my Mom did when I was little and it drove me crazy. I can still hear her saying, "Do you think this milk is sour? Try it." Or, "Do you think this looks spoiled. I think it's fine.." We were convinced that she had no sense of taste or smell. Now I understand how she felt about wasting food. She also used to serve juice in the teeniest little glasses (I swear they were shot glasses) and now I do the same thing!

Just yesterday, LOL! I'm making a spider costume for my ds, so instead of going to a fabric store and purchasing a round pillow form and some black material, I headed to the thrift store and found a round pillow and a black apron for less! I'm always picking things off the curb (found a great fisher price kitchen set that way) and with a bit of spit and polish, making them nice again. Dh doesn't understand this at all.

I reuse plastic silverware. Many of you probably do to. However, I've become the "Reuse the Plastic Queen" in my DH's family. His mom used to drive his four silbings NUTS washing and reusing plasticware after every family function. MIL is now doing better financially and she no longer insists on reusing it. BUT, I've since become MORE frugal than her and cannot let go. They all laughed when MIL said, "No need to save the plastic" at the last gathering and I piped up and said, "I'll take it".

I even bring it home after using it at work and wash/reuse it.

I have woken up to a house with no milk. No milk and how CAN I have my coffee???!!! I GOT TO have milk or cream or evaporated milk in my coffee. Once I was desparate and all I could find was some frozen cool whip. It tasted pretty good in my coffee!!!
