My name is Debbi and I'm 38. DH, Paul, is 36. Have have two kids from my previous marriage DS, Matt, is 10 and DD, Tara, is 8. We also have one DS, Duncan, who just turned 20 months. I am still nursing, and saved lots of money his first year by never having to buy formula. :-) I found this board inadvertantly while going to a different ivillage board and it happened at a perfect time... I thought I wa about to lose my job, my company had massive layoffs the end of last month, and started reading for ways that we could cut costs.
We're taking little baby steps towards being frugal, and I know there are some things that with working full time, managing the house, DH, and the dog, I can never do, such as make my own laundry detergent. Plus, DH and I are both on weight watchers and there are a alot of food allergies with the kids. So, we have to be careful on what foods we buy, etc. But, that being said... With what I learned while I was lurking, I started putting some of it ito practice. We stopped going to the main grocery store we were religiously going to, while convenient, it is also the most expensive, and also started buying more at Sam's Club, more generic brands instead of name brands, and also very carefully reading grocery store circulars before going shopping and hititng more than one store to buy stuff with the best sales. Well, in the past 4 weeks that I've been doing this, I've cut our weekly grocery bill by close to 50 dollars!! I'm so proud of myself and I couldn't have done it without this board. So, thank you very much!!!
One question, though... How do you know what the loss leaders are in the store circulars? What makes a loss leader vs. a really good deal vs. just a so-so deal?
Thanks for your help!
