Wow--luckily we have not had to deal w/all that herding stuff. Maybe because ours is older, who knows? But ours has to always be right with me, following me around. If I get up and leave a room, so does he. If I go in the basement, he stands at the top and looks down the steps the entire time. I know border collies have that herding instinct, but luckily here it is limited to just knowing where we all are, lol! And constantly watching us--that must be the stare, lol! Ours too was billed as Lab/Border collie. He does love the water and loves to swim.

Our 2 dogs complement each other pretty well and get along great. They love to *play fight*. But the Husky mix--Zeus--will mostly stand in one area and let the border collie mix--Oreo--do all the running around. Occasionally they'll get to tearing around the yard together. When we let them off leash in a dog park or big open field, you can really tell the breed influences. They are both fast, but Oreo will win the race every time, even with a head start. He's the sprinter. And Zeus is in it for the long haul, more endurance like sled dogs.

Good luck. I bet he'll mellow with age and your patience/training!

When we got the dog from a shelter he was billed as a Lab with some Border Collie in him.

We also have border collie/lab mix. We adopted him this summer from a shelter. Not a puppy though--he's 9. But I hear you on the hyper vigilant thing! He follows me everywhere and is always right behind me. I can't even count the times I've about fallen over him when not knowing he was that close. He finally will lay down at the edge of the kitchen floor on his pillow when I'm working in there. I'm thinking about training him to walk on our treadmill to use up some of his energy! Our husky mix is much more laid back!

What's the reasoning behind the tennis balls? I might need to try something like that!
