question about general house bills

hi everyone!

so after about a year of convincing, i have finally got my dh on board with the idea of moving to my country (U.S.). we know the economy situation so we know we will need to have a good amount of money saved to live on until we find jobs. my grandma has a house we can stay in rent free until we become employed and then she will charge us a discounted rent.

my problem is that i have lived in Athens since i was 18 (long story) so i have never been an adult in the U.S. so i never had to pay bills, therefore i have NO CLUE as to how much money people need (on average) to pay utilities and food.

i was wondering if any of you would volenteer information of how much you usually pay for electricity, water, and food per month so we can get a rough idea of how much money someone needs to survive.

thanks!

hey, thanks alot for the info!

i know the job market is pretty bad. the only thing that gives me hope is that my sister, by her own choice, has switched jobs 4 times so far this year so im hoping maybe her luck will rub off on me. she hasnt found anything better than $10/hour though. that's what she is working with now.

electricity is wow! but i grew up in FL so i know how hot it gets so i know that a/c is a must. my family have said that food in Athens is about the same cost as it is in FL so i have a rough idea of that expence.

as for cable. this might sound odd but i dont watch tv. dh watches tv but i dont think he will ask for cable at least until his english gets good enough to understand with out subtitles, lol.

the gas prices sound good. better than here anyway! we paied 1.94/ liter a couple days ago and there are 3.5 liters in a gallon so OUCH!
