Where best to concentrate basic efforts?

ie. ---- Concentrate on the very STORES where I shop the most?

ie ----- Concentrate on the specific PRODUCTS which I like best?    ie.  contact the companies & request coupons?

I don't bother with couponing at all. I'm just not organized enough to be a super couponer. Plus, we don't eat a lot of processed foods, so coupons are rarely for food items we use. I'll clip coupons for other things that we DO use (detergent, paper towels, bathroom tissue, shampoo, etc.).

I would suggest taking inventory of the things you buy the most. Certain items are available for a lot less at specific times of the year (there are sites out there that give you time tables, but I don't have the links right now). When those things are on sale, that's when combining sale prices with coupons pays off the most. There's an article that might help: http://www.ivillage.com/extreme-couponing-tips/7-a-353540
