I think dh said we should have enough to get us thru most of the winter(we run the oil furnace only when it gets real cold and stays real cold like 20 or below )

I think someone said we had 1000 gallon tank but no clue

the rest of the time we supplement with electric baseboard heat (dh bought them at lowes and installed them himself and each one has its own thermostat to adjust for each room

last year we found out the more the oil furnace runs the girls start having their asthma issues so we switched to electric baseboard heat and only run the oil heat when needed

our oil company charges us the price that oil is in the market that day and then gives us a "Max" $$ amount that they won't go over. It's pretty economical and we always do well with them.

We are on propane, not fuel oil, but it is the same basic buying process. We have three options. I can either prepay the entire winter amount for $1.289 per gallon, I can book or reserve my estimated propane usage for $1.389 per gallon, with $.10 down per gallon, or I can pay truck price on an as needed basis. I will be booking this year, same as last, and probably going with the even pay program, if I can. We also get a $.02 cent discount because DH works for the company.

BTW, last year, the book price was $2.249 per gallon, before my $.02 discount. YAY!!! I was very happy to see the drastic price reduction.

This year DH will just buy diesel from the truck stop and fill up as needed. Already the oil company has sent out its prices for lock in and they are really high and regular diesel is so much cheaper for us. Everyone we know does it like this, I can't think of a single person that plans to buy oil from a supplier this year.
