I've recently moved to northern Mont. & this is the first winter of living in this house, which is heated by propane. I have 1,000 gal tank. This was filled in the summer (June special pricing) then topped off in Oct. By the end of Dec. it only had 20% left!! This cost a whopping $1250 to fill up. We signed up to be on the 'keep full' route where every 4-6wks they stop by & fill it up. It has been 5wks & the truck came today...another $1000 !!!!!! This is crazy! Is this really how much it costs to heat a house?! Makes me wonder if we have a leak! My house is about 3,000sq ft & it HAS been pretty cold ( -30 ) but I dont see how anyone can afford it! I

I don't have a good comparison for you - my house ran on propane for heat/hot water/cooking/dryer, but that was in Southern California! Our neighborhood did get into the 20's overnight for a few months of the year, but still is no comparison. We spent about $400 per fill, (two 250-gallon tanks) but only needed topping twice a year. The only time we drained our tanks to 20% was when the house was new and a construction defect arose - they had installed natural gas fittings on the furnaces, water heaters and fireplaces instead of propane. The emergency shutoffs kicked in, in every single house in the neighborhood, once our garages were full of gas. Luckily nothing exploded, but we weren't reimbursed for the wasted gas either.

I live in So. Cal in the high desert area. We get snow and freezing temps all winter.

That's Funny! I live in Phelan! I really didn't think it was that much of a temp difference between the high desert and down the hill, but it certainly is!!
