Is it really cheaper for him to upgrade that way?

Carol, with all due respect, please give up the idea that DH "deserves" a new computer.

if it's not used for work*ie my husband works with the internet so his computer needs to be up to date we can get 2 years out of them before he NEEDS a new one* it sounds like this is a want not a need... no one DESERVES anything its' cheaper to get a whole new computer then to update the parts you mentioned which shows your dh doesn't know what he's talking about on this subject... put yoru foot down just because he thinks he DESERVES something he doesn't NEED doesn't mean he gets it ...it's more important you can pay your bills each month.

and i can't be the only one with a dh always telling me i should spend extra money on myself?

I posted below about spending $75 to upgrade my RAM (operating speed) from 256MB to 2GB. It's almost like having a new computer. If it's hard drive space, that's cheap as well - $100 will probably get you 300GB or more.

Based on useage.
