Mostly I would just really limit the dollar amount you spend on each child.

If there are siblings it can be nice to get them something to share. Like a board game or a two DVD set. That way if you were budgeting say, $20 per kid you could spend $30 for two kids and save $$$ Plus, as a parent you aren't bringing as much stuff home to clutter things up (which is why I wouldn't recommend getting a bunch of stuff from the dollar store--it isn't usually well cared-for because it is cheap so it ends up broken or is just more clutter).

You could also join the Disney DVD club--I think right now the deal is 4 movies a dollar if you have a code and then two more for about 1/2 off.

Books are always great too! You can get a few paperback books for very little money.

I make many gifts myself. Knitting winter sets, shawls, sweaters etc..

I also limit who I buy for. I have too large a family to buy for everyone. I buy for my dh's sister's two kids (but not his sister), I buy for my inlaws and that's everyone on his side of the family.

On my side I buy for my mom, my sister and her dh (my son's godparents) and I buy for two family members (we draw names)

My Dh and Ds I usually buy something simple and practical.

I finished my shopping for everyone months ago. The name draw is all that is left and we drew those names last weekend.

My advice. Keep it simple.

for kids, I like puzzles, games and craft kits....I can easily find them for $5-10 per person

or family gifts are good....a bowl filled with popcorn, candy and a movie rental card or a couple of DVD's for them to watch together

I was discussing this with my husband last night. We usually get "family" gifts. For instance, for his sister's family (2 adults, 4 kids), a few years ago we did "movie night". Got 2 family friendly DVDs, some popcorn, some candy, and some of those "gourmet" sodas. Bought a huge bowl at the dollar store, put all of it in the bowl and wrapped it up.

Another time we did baskets with a cutting board, a loaf of bread DH made, some teas, a mug, and some fancy jams and jellies. My grandmother LOVED hers.

This year, we're going to buy for the kids, but for the adults I think we will do a magazine subscription. We also tend to do things like GCs for restaurants. One of my cousins is an accountant for the company that owns Olive Garden/Red Lobster. She gave us GCs last year for them, and we were so happy with that, as we got to have a "date" night.
