on the other side.....many customers complained big time about having to show their ID's for purchases, the inconvenience, etc (I worked in retail for a long time) when the Visa/MC debit cards first starting becoming popular the commercials raved about how convenient it would be to not have to show your ID, etc.
it's a balancing act for the company to decide where to draw the line between customer convenience and risk of liability

Stores have gone to the no signature needed for under a certain dollar amount and no i.d. checking because it is what customers as a whole want. Most people are in such a hurry that they don't want to sign anything let alone drag their I.D. out to show the cashier that they are who the card says they are.
Being someone who has had my credit cards stolen I can say when it happens they are not charging under $25 on them.
Personally, I think checking signatures is pretty annoying. I don't even sign my name to the electronic boxes, I draw a line and hit accept.
If you have a problem with a credit card policy, use cash.
