Just got the Rx to start on Focalin - We will begin trying it on Sat!

What can anyone tell me about this med? I've got to gather info for my 11yo dd.

Thanks!

Anything particular you want to know? It's been a lovely med for my son...standard ritalin side-effects, but much less than other ritalin meds.

Focalin is an extended release form of Ritalin. It's supposed to suppress appetite less than other Ritalin products, although we didn't see any difference (our son truly just doesn't like to eat). We found that it didn't last as long as other products, like Concerta, but it worked well when it was at its peak.

Good luck! Hope it works out. If not, don't worry at all because it can take a lot of trial and error to find the right one.

My son (10) has been on Focalin XR for 3 years now with gradual dosage increases.

Thanks Megan, "FebJune...", and Kathy.
You make me feel good - as I really don't KNOW of anyone else w/a child on Focalin - prob. do - just don't know about it.

We are going to start Sat - so I HOPE all goes well.

Kathy - Why does the little can of soda help just prior to "crash"?

Also -
About how soon will we see results!?

Assuming sleep & appetite are the main sideeffects? (i've not yet read up on it but hope to today!)

The caffeine, being a stimulant helps with crashes and meltdowns. ON weekends when DD needs a tiny bit of focus, I have found a Mountaind Dew or Monster does wonders.

A child may HAVE ADHD, but it is not what they ARE. Never tell a child they ARE ADHD.

We switched our 12.5 yo DS to Focalin from Concerta about a month ago to help improve his appetite. We also decreased the relative dose and stopped giving him boosters after school and on weekends.

He was taking 54mg Concerta. He's now taking 10 mg Focalin.

School has not noticed a change in him, so I guess it's lasting long enough to get him through the 8 hr school day. He goes to a very small charter school, and after 7 yrs, they know how to handle him pretty well. He does metabolize meds quickly, and I can tell when I pick him up that it's worn off.

And he has been eating up a storm. He's gained 6 lbs in the month which is huge for him. And his sleeping has improved. Both of which I think have made it easier for him to figure out how to control his behavior on the lower dose and unmedicated on weekends. We've tried doing this before with no success: his behavior forced us to put him back on meds.

So for us, Focalin has been a positive experience. I can't really point to any negatives. We haven't experienced a crash when it wears off - more like a ramp up, LOL, as his hyperactivity kicks in. But with the improvement in eating and sleeping, his general mood is better and he's more.....involved with trying to control himself.

Ok -
She's on XR. Started yesterday - She stayed up very late last nite (like til 3am!)
This morn, of course, she thru a fit about taking it, but she did & then stormed out of the room. I hadta follow her out & make her open her mouth & show me she really took it! UGH!

Is that terrible? But that's the sort of stuff we've had to deal w/w/her - Am I gonna have to fight ev. morn w/her!?

We open the capsule and put it on a spoon of applesauce -- DS takes it with no problem.
