Hi Everyone...

Mostly a lurker, but have sometimes posted regarding my sweet 6 year old son, diagnosed with ADHD about a year ago. On Daytrana 10mg then up to 15 mg, then switched to Vyvanse and Focalin (both nightmares). Then, at a new psychiatrist's suggestion, cutting the corner off of a 15 mg patch of Daytrana. That same doc diagnosed a Mood Disorder-NOS and another mood issue. Finally got into the behavioral health department at our local children's hospital. Psychiatrist there said she didn't think he had any mood disorders...she thinks ADHD with Anxiety. Kept him on Daytrana 10 mg and ordered a full psychological evaluation, which will take place on the 12th. We saw her on the 30th of June and she prescribed 5 mg. of Adderall XR. To be honest, the Daytrana makes him a bit spacey and I'm not sure it's the right medicine for him (but he is SUCH a well behaved boy and handles school so well while on it!). She doesn't think it's the right medicine because of his anxiety and wants to start treating that after the results from the eval. come back. Anyway, he was in school until July 24th (goes to a great school that breaks at the beginning of June and then comes back for 5 weeks in the summer), so I didn't want to switch until he was finished.

I finally started the Adderall today and the results weren't great. His impulsivity was back in full force and he was a bit angry and definitely irritable. How long should I keep him on this med/dose before I call the dr., do you think? I am conscious that school is starting in 5 weeks and I want to have him headed toward the right path by then!

Thanks for your help!

HI

5 mg is such a tiny dose, he may need more. Also, keep in mind there is a reason it is referred to as "MADerall". It may not be the med for him.

A child may HAVE ADHD, but it is not what they ARE. Never tell a child they ARE ADHD.

Yes, we found Maderall to be quite accurate with our son. He went into very random rages (playing happily one minute, in a psycho rage the next) as it tapered off. We gave it a couple more days and when this continued, we stopped Adderall.
