ADHD and OCD?

Hi everyone,

I need some help/advice. My 9 year old son dx ADHD last June. Currently on Adderall XR 20 mg. He is having a heck of a time in school with frustrations over keeping up with the class. He's bright (above average IQ; always A's and B's even before meds). He's hung up on his handwriting of all things. He'll copy over and over on top of letters, color in the circle, etc. so that he falls behind in the class work. When I get home, if I work with him, he finishes his homework within 20-30 minutes. He also often gets caught in lies about his day. He doesn't want to admit to what he's done. He'll often twist things and say "that's not what you said", like he's trying to convince himself that he's right and therefore shouldn't be in trouble. So my question is, could the handwriting thing be OCD? He often gets hyperfocused on something, while the rest of the class is moving on. It even happened in karate. The kids had gotten their gear off and in their bags and were stretching. Andrew was still messing with his zipper on the bag.

Any thoughts? i'm trying to get into a neurologist; so far the earliest appt is November.

thanks so much.

Could be a number of htings. OCD, he may need OT (occupational therapy) or he may be hyper focusing and not know it. The teacher can help in some ways by rediresting him.

They got my son to stop going over & over his letters by making him erase it if he did it and write the letter over again. This made him aware he was doing it. The teacher and OT had to be right near Joienr everytime he wrote to poit out that he went over a letter. After a while Joiner did it by himself. Now he doesn't do it anymore.

Thanks Kathy,

I have a meeting with the principal and school counselor on Friday. I am making him do just what you suggest..i make him rewrite. Last night I talked him through his homework as I drove home from work and that helped. He read the words out loud as he wrote and I think it helped keep him focused..his brain and his hand were connected.
