My son is almost 12 and has always had horrible sleep issues, both on and off his adhd meds-I am talking from birth he didn't sleep! He has multiple sleep studies and tried several meds. Right now he takes clonidine .2mg, he has been on clonidine for a few years and it doesn't always work but is is better with it than without it. He was on .1mg and we had to up the dose about 2 years ago. Sometimes he still is awake all night but that is about once every other week instead of every night.

Recently he also developed chronic hives. He has had them since March and been on several types of meds to control them. The only one (aside from prednisone, which he can't stay on forever) that works to control them is the antihistamine hydroxyzine, it has a sedating effect. He takes 2 at night and it is really helping the sleeping. It is much stronger than benadryl or xyzal. The allergist said he has some chronic insomniacs that beg him to let them continue taking this med. Unfortunately we can only be on it until we get the hives under control but for now it is helping.
