Any Concerta users?

I posted about my son taking 5mg, then 10mg of Focalin as the 5 didn't work. But on the 10 he complained of dry mouth/thirst and now refuses to take the Focalin. His psychiatrist suggested we try Concerta. Is anyone's child using it, or tried it? Did it work? Side effects? Seems like it may have worse side effects than Focalin, especially for a child with anxiety. My son is 8, almost 9 with ADHD, anxiety, Aspergers, PPD-NOS.

Thank you!

Our son has been on Concerta a few years now. We LOVE it! It completely transforms things for him. He goes from running around the house and across furniture, being totally defiant and unpleasant, making strange noises, hurting his sister, throwing things to a sweet boy who can focus, not hurt others, remain calm (yet still have plenty of energy) and be pleasant to be around. People asked what I was thankful for at Thanksgiving and I said, "The makers of Concerta." Our son also has OCD, a form of anxiety, and it still works great for him.

You do have to increase the dosage over time. It may be to get the initial dosing just right (which varies by each child) or to deal with changes, such as after a growth spurt. It's pretty obvious when it's time to up the dosage because we start to get the bad reports from school and things get ugly at home, too, usually pretty suddenly. Boost the Concerta a bit and so far, that always does the trick. Our son started off on 16 mg., I believe, and now takes 54 mg.

Only side effect for him is a decreased appetite mid-day, which is strong at the beginning when upping a dose or when just starting. However, that becomes far less of a side effect over time. Our son naturally hates to eat to begin with, so we once switched to Focalin because the doctor said it was the same as Concerta, just with a side effect of boosting appetite. However, that never materialized with our son and he processed Focalin WAY too fast (out of his system by lunchtime ... not good).

Good luck! Hope Concerta works just as well for your son as it does for ours.

Hi Zanne, thanks for your experience. Glad to hear it worked, however, am concerned that you had to keep increasing the dose. Do you know if that is common? I wonder why....

HI, thanks for getting back to me with your experience. I supposed we better give it a try and see what happens. I'd love to see the remarkable change that some see in their child after finding a medication that works.

Thank you!

My son has been on Concerta for about 5 months and is doing very well. We tried several other medications and nothing worked. When he started the Concerta I could not believe the difference in his behavior. He started on 18 mg and was on that dose until very recently we upped it to 27 mg.

The only side affect I saw was his eating was less during the middle of the day but that has since gotten better. He does not have any problems with sleep.

Good luck!
