Another question I have is if your child is on meds, are they regularly monitored by your psychiatrist or whoever prescribed the meds on a weekly/monthly basis. Because I know our mental health for our insurance is not that great so most of this would be out of pocket....just wondering.

No. They leave it to us to do most of the monitoring. After all, we're the ones that see them on a regular basis. (By we, I mean parents and teachers.) If I have a concern, I usually talk to the teacher to see if she's seeing the same things. When enough is enough, I call the doctor.

We go either every 3 mos or 6 mos for a weight and blood pressure check - I think it's like $10. Once a year, my ped does an actual physical and asks questions about how things are going. When we needed to change meds during the year, I talked with him by phone, and there was no charge for that.

That's our story. We're a relatively straight-forward case - just one med.

Yes ... Right now, DS goes monthly. When we find a med (or combination) that is working well, we can usually get by going every 6-8 weeks, but absolutely this is monitored regularly. It really must be!

My son is monitored by his child psychiatrist. Our insurance wont pay for ADHD alone, but my son has a duel DX. When we were first starting out, his pediatrician would monitor the ADHD meds. We would only go in if we had a problem, or we had an ADHD check up every year. We did have huge problems, so the pediatrician found us a child psychiatrist to see. We see the child psych every 6 -8 weeks, and have blood draws every 3 months, unless we have a problem.
