Best friend is changing schools

Our son's best friend in kindergarten, a boy who also has ADHD and is like our son's twin, will be changing schools next year. His mom had an argument with the school principal and wants nothing to do with him anymore, so she's sending both of her kids to a neighboring school next year. Our son is going to be devastated! The transition to first grade is a big one and we had some comfort in that his friend would also be there. Neither of the boys knows yet about the situation.

Anyone gone through the loss of a friend? Transitional times are notoriously difficult for our kids with ADHD and losing a best friend at school is going to be huge. I'm hoping someone has some advice on making this go as smoothly as possible.

We haven't had the problem of a friend changing schools, but DD's best friend changed grades. She was sent back to 1st grade about 6 weeks into their 2nd grade year. She is from Russia, and she and DD became friends over the summer. Due to a language barrier, she could read a word, but not tell you it's meaning etc, she was bumped back. DD dealt with it just fine, and it opened the door for her to make new friends.

Hope it all goes well, it is tough though.

A child may HAVE ADHD, but it is not what they ARE. Never tell a child they ARE ADHD.

My son is entering middle school and all his friends are going to different schools. This has been very hard on him and he wants to go with the most of them to a school that is not in our district. We have applied for special consideration but it is a lottery and I NEVER GET A THING this way. So the chance is slim and none. I also have him signed up for a magnet school with only 52 places and 3000 applications. I am not counting on this either. So we have no idea still where DS will be going. Hard on me as well as him.
