I asked our general practitioner for a referral to a nuero pysch. He had no problem with doing that, and because the doctor referred, insurance paid for the evaluation.
The school was the first to recommend an outside evaluation at a location that does multidisciplinary testing. I went to the pediatrician for a referral. He wanted me to fill out ADHD questionnaires. I was a bit frustrated, because I asked for a referral, not a diagnosis from him. I went ahead and filled out the papers and before the school even did theirs the doc said, "your son had ADHD, here are some of your medication options". I firmly stated that I was not ready to go down that road yet and could he please just put in for the referral. (I no longer have this ped btw) Okay, so long story short. DS was evaluated by a psychologist, genetic pediatric specialist(and director of the institution), and SP for his speech disorder. He was diagnosed with ADHD/CT and Anxiety Disorder. He has also since been seen by a psychiatrist who agreed with these.
HI
Yes, definitely go with another Dr.GP's, Pediatricians etc usually do not have the knowledge of ADHD to diagnose.
A child may HAVE ADHD, but it is not what they ARE. Never tell a child they ARE ADHD.
